On the 7th of February 2023, the Institute of Nuclear Physics was visited by a delegation from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) of the US Department of Defense, headed by David Fishman. The working meeting between two sides was devoted to the discussion of cooperation within the framework of the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency's “Global Nuclear Security” Program.
While opening the meeting, General Director of the INP Sayabek Sakhiyev spoke about the prospects for the development of the nuclear industry in Kazakhstan, the current cooperation of the INP with more than 30 international organizations, such as CERN, JINR and also spoke about mega-science projects that will be implemented in the coming years on the basis of the Institute.
The following issues were discussed during the meeting: ˗ Possible cooperation to support the establishment of a regional nuclear forensics center at the INP; ˗ Modernization of the reactor's physical protection system; ˗ Modernization of the physical protection system of the radionuclide source storage facility (strengthening the physical protection system of the RWDS); ˗ Support for the construction of the Guest House, consisting of 3 buildings.
They also discussed issues of further development of the Nuclear Safety Training Center (NSTC). The Head of the Center, Natalya Izmailova presented the results of the center's activities in 2022 and the development plan for 2023.
