On March 12, a consultation event on National Nuclear Forensics Libraries, organized by the US Office of Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence, started at the Institute. During the three-day event, nuclear forensics experts from the United States and Kazakhstan will share their experience in creating national nuclear forensics libraries, discuss key nuclear security issues and challenges and conduct a series of practical exercises related to nuclear incidents.
This event was opened by the General Director of the Institute, Sayabek Sakhiyev, noting that one of the main activities of the Institute is training of highly qualified personnel for the nuclear industry. For this purpose, the Training Centers on Radiation Safety, Nuclear Security and Destructive Testing Methods were opened under support of the International Atomic Energy Agency and the US Department. Currently, the Institute’s specialists jointly with American partners are working in the framework of a project to establish a Regional Nuclear Forensics Center at the Institute.
Also, on the first day of the event, the specialists of the Institute, Advisor to the General Director for International Relations Askar Nabi and Head of the Center for Integrated Environmental Research Adilzhan Serikov, made reports on the nuclear forensics activities carried out by the Institute.
It should be noted that the Institute of Nuclear Physics includes the official laboratory for forensics examination of nuclear and radioactive materials in Kazakhstan, providing support to the country's law enforcement agencies in conducting special research for more than 20 years.
