Physical Protection Training

On June 30-July 4, 2025, the Nuclear Security Training Centre of Institute of Nuclear Physics has conducted the Fundamentals of Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and Facilities Training for specialists of UMP JSC, uranium mining enterprises of NAC Kazatomprom JSC and INP’s specialists.

The purpose of the Course is to develop in trainees the knowledge and skills necessary for organizing and ensuring the physical protection of nuclear materials and facilities by preventing unauthorized actions, timely detection of threats, and response to emergency situations.

The theoretical part of the training was devoted to the requirements of the regulatory framework of Kazakhstan and IAEA recommendations, the basics of designing, installing, and maintaining physical protection systems (PPS), controlling access to a facility, protecting materials during transportation, and conducting inspections and functional tests. During practical classes, students in groups designed the protection of a hypothetical facility, conducted inspections in training vehicles and pedestrian checkpoints, inspected a training storage facility for nuclear materials, and assessed the effectiveness of PPS.

During the discussions, the specialists considered various aspects of physical protection and related problems. As part of the Course, a familiarization tour of the reactor was organized for the students.

Based on the results of testing, 13 specialists, including two INP’s specialists, received certificates on the successful completion of the Course.
