On April 20-24, 2026, the Nuclear Security Training Centre of Institute of Nuclear Physics has conducted Course for Kazakhstan nuclear industry specialists on fundamentals of physical protection of nuclear material and facilities.
The purpose of the Course is to develop the knowledge and skills necessary for organizing and ensuring the physical protection of nuclear materials and facilities by preventing unauthorized actions, timely detection of threats, and response to emergency situations.
During the training, specialists examined various aspects of physical protection and related issues. The theoretical part of the course covered Kazakhstan regulatory requirements and IAEA recommendations, design fundamentals, maintenance of physical protection systems, protection of materials during transportation, and testing the performance of physical protection systems. During practical classes, trainees designed the protection of a hypothetical facility, conducted inspections in training vehicles and pedestrian checkpoints, inspected a training storage facility for nuclear materials, and assessed the effectiveness of physical protection system by executing a scenario involving an attempted theft of nuclear material by a group of intruders.
