Nuclear Material Transport Security: IAEA Course was completed at the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan

The IAEA Regional Training Course on the Security of Nuclear Material in Transport in the Europe Region was completed at the Nuclear Security Training Center of the Institute of Nuclear Physics. From October 28 to November 1, 2024, 18 specialists from eight countries, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Russian Federation and Uzbekistan were trained under the guidance of the IAEA experts.

The course, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency, included 20 lecture and practical modules covering the key aspects of nuclear material categorization and security management, as well as the safety and security functions interface. The training was conducted by the Nuclear Security Officer in Transport of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security Mr. Jinho Chung, the IAEA International Expert Mr. Gary Smith from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (USA) and Mr. Rustem Brishev from KazAtomProm.

During the course, the specialists were engaged in the real scenario-based exercises and discussions, which allowed them to exchange their experiences in developing and implementing security actions for nuclear material in transport. As part of the course, the participants also presented on their experiences in developing regulations and implementing security in their countries.

A technical tour was held for the course participants on the final day of the course. They could visit some of the Institute's nuclear facilities, in particular the WWR-K research reactor complex.

After successful completion of the course, the participants were awarded with the IAEA certificates.
