From August 31 to September 4, 2026, the Training Course «Nuclear Facility Physical Protection System design and Configuration» was held at the Nuclear Security Training Center. The training was organized in the framework of cooperation with the Threat Reduction Agency of the US Department of Defense under the “Cooperative Threat Reduction” Program.
At the opening of the Course, Sayabek Sakhiyev, Director General of the INP, addressed the participants with a welcoming word, briefly outlining the Institute's main activities.
The purpose of the Course was to develop the knowledge and skills required to design a comprehensive configuration of a nuclear facility’s physical protection system aimed at mitigating the risks and potential consequences of unauthorized actions through the integration of detection, delay, and response measures.
The Course was designed for specialists responsible for nuclear security and having practical experience in this area. The Course was attended by specialists from Kazakhstan representing CASC, CSEC, INP, Kazatomprom, KNPP, UMP, Ulba-FA, NNC, and MAEС. The training included theoretical and practical sessions, discussions, and briefings. During these exercises, participants analyzed the relationship between threats and risks, identified internal and external threats to a hypothetical nuclear facility, and assessed the potential consequences of unauthorized actions by intruders. Based on the results of this analysis, the participants developed a physical protection system configuration for the hypothetical facility.
Following the results of the training, 14 Kazakhstan specialists received certificates of successful completion of the Course.
