Meeting on the conversion of research reactors

On the 7th of February 2023, representatives of the National Nuclear Security Administration and U.S. National Laboratories, headed by the Team leader of the Office of Conversion Brian Wood visited the INP with a working visit. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss work on the IGR research reactor (NNC RK) for low-enriched uranium (LEU) fuel.

During the meeting, General Director of the INP Sayabek Sakhiyev briefly spoke about the scientific achievements and development prospects of Institute.

  • In 2024-25, together with the Laue-Langevin Institute and scientists from the Neutron Physics Laboratories of the JINR we are planning to launch the largest source of ultra-cold neutrons. I think that, this joint work will be one of the first mega-science projects in Kazakhstan, - said the General Director.
  • Also during the meeting, plans for further work on the conversion of the IGR research reactor to LEU fuel were discussed. As participants noted, the conversion of the research reactor IGR to LEU fuel was initially seen as a potentially more complex task, requiring the executors to find the best possible solutions. The participants discussed in detail the stages of further work and outlined the necessary steps for the implementation of the conversion tasks.
