Kazakhstan Took Part in the Discussion of the JINR Budget and Strategic Projects at the Meetings in Varadero

On 1–3 December, the sessions of the Finance Committee (FC) and the Committee of Plenipotentiary Representatives (CPR) of the Governments of the JINR Member States were held in Varadero, Republic of Cuba. The Republic of Kazakhstan was represented by the Plenipotentiary Representative of the Government of Kazakhstan to JINR, Director General of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Atomic Energy, Sayabek Sakhiev, as well as the Head of the National Group of Kazakhstan at JINR, Yerzhan Mukhamedzhanov.

During the Finance Committee session, participants reviewed the draft JINR budget for 2026, the indicative contributions of the Member States for 2027–2029, as well as the Institute’s financial regulations and the procedures for introducing amendments to the budget. The results of the June meeting of the Working Group on Financial Issues under the CPR Chair were presented by the head of the working group, Yerzhan Mukhamedzhanov. The outcomes of the 2024 audit of the Institute were also presented.

At the CPR session, an overview of JINR’s key achievements for the period 2021–2025 was delivered, covering the development of accelerator complexes, the modernization of research infrastructure, the implementation of scientific projects, and the expansion of educational and personnel development programmes. Special attention was given to the participation of young specialists from the Member States in the Institute’s research activities. The Kazakh delegation emphasized the importance of further strengthening scientific cooperation and promoting joint initiatives.

The Committee supported the Directorate’s initiatives to establish new joint scientific facilities in the Member States, including the development and construction of a high-intensity ultra-cold neutron source (AISUN) at the WWR-K research reactor in Kazakhstan. The implementation of the project to establish the AISUN will contribute to the development of a modern research infrastructure, expand fundamental and applied research capabilities, and further strengthen scientific and technical cooperation between Kazakhstan and JINR.

As part of the delegation’s programme, a ceremonial event marking the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Cuba’s accession to JINR was held on 4 December in Havana. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Cuban government, delegations of JINR Member States, and leading scientists from across the region.
