Institute of Nuclear Physics staff exchanged experience in the United States on nuclear material analysis methods

From 12 to 19 September, as part of the delegation from Kazakhstan, specialists of the Institute of Nuclear Physics, Director of the Department of Strategy and SustainabilityAdilzhan Serikov, Advisor to the Director General for International Relations Askar Nabi, and Head of the Individual Dosimetry Control Service of the Radiation Safety Department Yernat Nurtazin took part in meetings and trainings on nuclear forensics organized by US DoE/NNSA’s office of Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence

On 12 September, a meeting was organised at the office of the Bettelle Institute in Washington, D.C., with representatives of the US Department of Energy, led by Assistant Deputy Administrator Christine Bent.The parties discussed the status of the project on establishment of a Nuclear Forensics Centre at the Institute of Nuclear Physics, as well as the next phases of the project on establishment of a National Nuclear Forensics Database on Uranium Concentrates in Kazakhstan.

From 15 to 19 September, in College Station, Texas, the Institute specialists took part in a workshop on gamma spectrometry of nuclear and radiological materials seized from illicit trafficking. The exercises were conducted both in the field at a specially designated site called Disaster City and in the laboratories of Texas A&M University.

The Institute specialists made introductory presentations on the activities of the Institute of Nuclear Physics in general and on the nuclear forensic studies carried out in the Institute's laboratories.
