A delegation from the Institute, led by Director General Sayabek Sakhiyev and assisted by the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, paid a visit to the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva.
During their visit, the delegates got acquainted with the work being done in the RD51 and DRD1 laboratories, and also visited the CERN Control Center. Eraldo Olivieri, the head of the DRD1 collaboration, spoke about the benefits of Kazakhstan's involvement in this collaboration and expressed gratitude for the fruitful discussion during the establishment of DRD1.
Additionally, during their visit to the NA62 experimental area, the active involvement of the institute's staff in NA62 meetings was discussed as part of an addendum to the memorandum of understanding signed in June 2023 between CERN, NA62, and INP.
The head of the CMS collaboration, Patricia McBride, introduced members of the institute's delegation to the work of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The CMS experiment is one of the largest international scientific collaborations in history, bringing together approximately 5,500 particle physicists, engineers, technicians, students, and other support staff from more than 240 institutes in 54 different countries.
During the meeting with the Director of CERN for International Relations, Charlotte Varakaule, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's reforms aimed at the comprehensive development of science in Kazakhstan were highly appreciated. Ms. Varakaule praised the consistent steps taken by the Head of Kazakhstan, including the division of the Ministry of Science and Education into two separate departments, the revival of the National Academy of Sciences to state status, and the multiple increase in funding for science over the past few years. She expressed hope that these measures will help Kazakhstan's scientific potential reach a new level.
At the end of the meeting, CEO Sayabek Sakhiyev expressed his gratitude to his European colleagues for their warm hospitality. He noted that Kazakhstan actively participates in various international collaborations and CERN is not an exception. The Minister of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan also extended an invitation to the Director General of CERN, Ms. Fabiola Gianotti, to visit Kazakhstan on a working trip.
