INP and Marubeni Utility Services signed a contract for reactor technology development

Сooperation in advanced nuclear technologies between Kazakhstan and Japan has reached a new practical level.

December 19, 2025, a signing ceremony of the contract with Marubeni Utility Services, the subject of which is a feasibility study on the lifespan testing of high-temperature gas-cooled reactor fuel under transient conditions at the WWR-K research reactor, was held in Tokyo.

The contract was signed during the official visit of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, to Japan, that highlights the high level of cooperation between the two countries in the development of advanced nuclear technologies.

The customer of this work is the Japan Atomic Energy Agency. The contract includes a feasibility study for the life testing of high-temperature gas-cooled reactor fuel under transient operating conditions, which is an important step in confirming the safety and reliability of advanced reactor technologies.

The contract was signed on behalf of the Institute of Nuclear Physics by Director General Sayabek Sakhiyev, and on behalf of Marubeni Utility Services by President Takuma Nagase.

The signed contract is the first stage in preparation for the conclusion of a long-term contract in 2026 for full-scale research and development. The project's implementation confirms the Japanese side's high level of confidence in the scientific and technical potential of the Institute of Nuclear Physics and creates the foundation for further development of cooperation between Kazakhstan and Japan in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
