Azgir nuclear test site is located in Western Kazakhstan’s Atyrau region, 360 km north-west from Atyrau city. On its territory during the 1966-1979 period there were 17 underground nuclear explosions conducted in order to develop a technology of creating underground cavities of greater capacity for various purposes in salt domes.
Azgir scientific-production radioecological expedition was established in 1996. Expedition’s main goals:
ensuring conservation of AZGIR landfill sites
implementation of regular monitoring of landfill’s radiation status, adjacent territories and settlements
