INP’s Astana branch
The Institute of Nuclear Physics’ Astana branch of the Republic of Kazakhstan was founded with the purpose of forming, in partnership with L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, an interdisciplinary scientific and research complex as a regional center of natural sciences and scientific and technical accompaniment for specialists training for Kazakhstan’s nuclear industry.
Analysis of international experience shows that the most significant results in addressing problems of education and science integration, promotion of advanced technologies in the real economy, is realized by creating a major training and scientific-research facilities on the bases of large installations, capable of playing a role of a unifying foundation between education, science and business.
Complex is based on heavy-ion accelerator DC-60, put into effect in 2006. Please follow here for the accelerator room’s virtual tour.

Established complex became the first post-Soviet new major nuclear-physical installation in Kazakhstan for conducting fundamental and applied physics research, as well as technological activities, in the field of nuclear science and technology, which meet the world-class requirements. Selection of technical parameteres and accelerator DC-60’s placement is justified by the relevance and prospects of scientific and practical applications and the need to ensure comfortable conditions for the educational process organization, which is inextricably linked to carrying out scientific, technological and engineering works. Accelerator DC-60 – modern environmentally friendly installation with a low level of radiation risk.

Cooperation of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University and INP’s Astana branch – a remarkable example of a cooperation in which teaching and scientific experience, technical base of educational university and scientific-research institute, are combined together to achieve a common goal. Students, graduates, doctoral students and teachers of <abbr=”L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University”>ENU are involved in scientific research, works of various scientific and technical seminars and conferences held by the Institute. By working together it became possible to bring up a change of young nuclear scientists and prepare scientific-pedagogical personnel of high qualification. In order to ensure a high quality of the personnel training on accelerator’s complex base, in July of 2008 the International Department “Nuclear physics, new materials and technologies” was created, with the participation of <abbr=”L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University”>ENU, INP and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR, Dubna).

Personnel training in that department is carried out by direct participation of undergraduate and graduate students, PhD students of <abbr=”L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University”>ENU in scientific-technological research, that are being conducted on accelerator DC-60, starting from planning and experiment preparation to the release of finished scientific and technological products. Training of students, bachelors and graduates, as well as the training of PhD students is carried out with the participation of INP and JINR leading specialists in a coordinated and approved training program, in close connection with the themes and directions of scientific organizations.
